Tour Cape Winelands

As a visitor on a Cape Winelands tour you need to be prepared and have done some research. Prepared in the sense that the person you are guided by is somewhat of an expert. The reason is very simple; there are too many choices and you need someone that can discern on your behalf. The wine community in the Cape is massive.

International award winning wines are created year in and year out in the main wine producing regions within the Cape. Large as well as the smaller farms are able to compete with their international counterparts. Names such as Lanzerac, Nederberg and Constantia are just a few of the labels that appear and can boast their successful accolades.

The main areas where wine is produced is the Breede River Valley, Klein Karoo and the coastal region. The most popular with tourists is the coastal region as it contains places such as Stellenbosch, Paarl and Constantia. Groot Constantia is a very famous farm and vineyard, established by Simon van der Stel the then governor in 1685. It is considered to be the mother of all South African vineyards. It is also situated in a spectacular part of Cape Town within the shadow of Table Mountain.

The most visited part of the Cape that gets a lot of attention is the little town of Stellenbosch. Simon van der Stel is the patron after which it is named who happened to be the governor of the Cape at that time. It is also the site of the regions second largest university and the town is really a student village. Stellenbosch is also the site of the KWV [Koperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Beperkt]the company that brings together all the vineyard owners to ensure an international standard of excellence is maintained by sharing improved methods of wine making.

Stellenbosch and its neighbouring towns are the sites of a number of festivals which have come to host international visitors besides the regular farm stalls and markets that are open to the public. Some of these festivals have gained international recognition and attracts distinguished buyers and critics of wine especially when auctions are held.

What makes this district of the Cape and the Winelands tour so appealing is the character of the people that meet you and entertain you when you arrive. The demographic is diverse, energetic and lively to say the least but just as the natural features dictates; everything is affectionate, comforting and nothing less than impressive.
