Proper Wine Storage Temperature

Although wine can spend centuries in a bottle without perishing, it will go bad if it is not stored at the right wine storage temperature. If you have too low of a wine storage temperature it will cause the cork to shrink and allow oxygen to get in, thereby reducing the flavor of the wine and causing it to go flat. On the other hand, if you keep the wine storage temperature too high, the wine will end up aging faster than it should.

The trick with wine is to store it at stable and ideal temperature, and then serve it at the right temperature, one which will best show off its personal characteristics. White wine is usually best served cold, while red is often better at room temperature.

Remember that half of the enjoyment of drinking wine involves its aroma, and only by storing it at the proper temperature will you be able to experience all of the tantalizing aromas that your wine has to offer. The vapors in the wine are created as it warms up, so the wine should be a few degrees below its ideal drinking temperature for this to work.

Other Tips

There are other important issues to take into consideration when it comes to storing wine, including light. Light is another element that can cause your wine to ruin, and will prematurely age a bottle of wine. Because of this you should make sure that you store all your wine in a dark, damp location, one that is going to be far away from any direct light.

Your storage space should also be free of any potent odors, as these may be able to make their way through the corks and into the bottles of wine, giving them a distasteful flavor. Proper ventilation is a key factor to eliminating odors in the specific area that you have selected for storing your wine.
