Spanish Wine Regions
Spanish wines offer a diverse set of choices for almost any palate. Wine making in Spain is a tradition that goes back many centuries. The tradition of quality is evident in the Andalusia wine region where the sherry is world renowned. The wine regions of Spain offer surprising choices in wine for everyone.
Sherry is a wine that is fortified by adding alcohol before aging. Many wine varieties such as Fino, Oloroso, Manzanilla, and Amontillado are all considered sherries. Some sherries such as Fino and Manzanilla have more acidity and taste younger and crisper. Other sherries such as Amontillados and Olorosos are aged longer and have a mellower taste. Sherries are treasured as dessert wines, especially by the British.
Many people value the red wines of Spain. Spain enjoys plenty of sunshine and rich soils. The Aragonese produce robust wines with rich color and aroma. Another red gem from Spain is Grenache.
One of the largest wine making regions in the world, Castilla produces wines worthy of it's literary heritage. The reds are well represented by Tempranillo which is often blended with Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon from France. Syrahs are even beginning to become established. Airen is a crisp and refreshing white wine that doesn't disappoint.
Spanish whites can be found in the Rueda region, north of Madrid. These Spanish whites are made from Verdejo and are especially light and delicate. Another white, Sauvignon Blanc, is also becoming popular in this region.
But traditions in Spain change slowly and red is still dominant. Robust and heavy, the Ribera has seen a renaissance in the the last few decades. The Tinto Fino, a kind of Tempranillo makes a complex red that ages well.
Mencia has its own tradition of red, based on the Cabernet Franc. Secluded near Castilla y Leon, the wines are intense. Lighter roses are a staple of the region, too, though. A specialty white, made from Godello, is produced here as well.
Along the Mediterranean coast lies Catalonia which has a wine making tradition dating back to Greek times. Their time tested wine making skills produce the very hardy vinos rancios. White wines from Penedes are available for those with lighter tastes.
It will also cheerfully serve a sparkling wine from Cava. The latter is actually a kind of Spanish champagne, but much more full-bodied than the French version, as befits the area.
But to get the most distinctive feel, the best bet is to try one of the reds of Tarragona. Full-bodied, from Cariena and Garnacha grown in slate-enriched earth, it forms the pinnacle of wine from Catalonia.
Galicia has a tradition of red wine making that dates back to ancient Rome. Today white wines from Celtic tradition are even more popular. When mixed together, they are said to the perfect complement to seafood. This goes right along with the rich diversity of the wine regions of Spain.
