Wine Cellar Basics And Conditions

Maybe you have quite a collection of wine and decide to build a wine cellar, or perhaps you moved into a home that has an old wine cellar and you want to begin using it. The idea of a wine cellar is not just a place to store your wine, but storing it so that it is in an ideal environment to age to its perfection.

If you are building a wine cellar, you need to determine how large of a cellar and where the location will be. The size of your wine cellar truly depends on how much wine you have. If you have 100's of bottles, you probably need a larger cellar than if you have a collection of 50 bottles.

To create the ideal environment for storing your wine collection, your wine cellar should have a steady temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity level of approximately 65 percent. This provides ideal conditions for storing wine long term. If you keep the temperature at this cooler level, the aging process slows down, which is exactly what you want if you will be storing wine for a long period of time. The recommended humidity level will prevent moisture from getting in the bottles.

The northern regions of the country are naturally ideal for wine cellars because the temperatures are generally cooler with more humid conditions. If you live in a warm or dry climate you will have to take steps to create the right environment for wine storage.

Fortunately, there are some excellent wine cooling systems that make it possible to create the perfect climate conditions in your wine cellar. You can have a successful wine cellar even if you live in a hot, dry part of the country.

If you are building your wine cellar, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, your wall framing should be 2" x 6" and the ceiling frame should be 2" x 8" with polyethylene vapor barrier added to the ceiling and walls. You can use drywall for the sheathing, but it needs to be moisture resistant. The flooring as well needs to be moisture resistant, so opt for stone or hardwoods.

The right construction is important when building your own wine cellar, otherwise your wine will age too quickly or too much moisture could be in the room.

If your home has a wine cellar already in the basement, consider yourself lucky. You will still want to check the temperature and humidity by purchasing a thermometer for the wall. If you are lucky enough to have purchased a home with a very old wine cellar, you are in for a treat and you can add your wine and wonder how many bottles of wine have graced the shelves through the years.

A wine cellar provides a fun way to store your precious wine and allow each of them to age to perfection. It also gives you enough room to store the bottles that you will surely add to your collection in the future.
